As the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2024, you are given the potential of 525,600 minutes to be better. The best part is you decide what and how you define "better." You could aspire to be a better co-worker, manager, spouse, or friend. I will be better.."
Many will bring in the New Year with resolutions to be a better version of themself by losing weight, spending more time with family, and saving money. Five hundred twenty-five thousand and six hundred minutes seems plenty of time to accomplish what you want in 2025. Yet many often end the incoming year the same as they ended the previous year.
Is it you or the resolution? In a recent article in Forbes magazine, Dr. Jason Walker lists four reasons we often fail to succeed when setting resolutions.
It's too vague to work. (Be more productive)
Overloaded and unrealistic. (Consume only extremely high nutrient value foods)
No accountability, no progress. (Keep it to myself in case I fail)
Misaligned with what matters. (Won't make me a better person, leader, spouse, parent)
Instead, the article highlights what we should do to achieve our resolutions.
Choose a theme for the year.
Start with habits, not promises.
Go SMART or go home.
Build accountability into the plan.
Celebrate small wins along the way.
And avoid these three traps:
Taking on too much. (Launch three new organization programs, expand program service areas, double funding, and attend three new networking meetings monthly)
Rigid thinking. (The above is the only way I will be seen as a better leader or organization)
Neglecting progress. (Ignore good outcomes, increased awareness, and funding of an existing program to pursue the three new programs and expansion)
After much soul-searching, countless articles, and time-wasting how-to classes promising you'll exit as the best, my theme for 2025 is simple: Be Better. I will form habits around being a better manager, leader, collaborator, and human. Stay in touch, and let me know how I'm doing.
