Al served an entire career in the United States Army. He was proud of being an Army Ranger and Vietnam Veteran. Multiple deployments in Vietnam, Purple Heart, and Oak Leaf Clusters. At the time his illness began, little was known about the hazardous effects of Agent Orange exposure; there was a registry but not many benefits. Time costs.
What doctors diagnosed as chronic bronchitis turned out to be advanced-stage lung cancer.
One of my heroes died too young, at the age of 51.
I didn't know he was struggling financially. I knew he mixed powdered milk with water for his cereal daily, but I thought that was because he was economically savvy to save money. Too young to take his social security and relying only on his retiree pay, many things financially were out of reach as he suffered. He would have benefited from home care, nutrition assistance, and disability benefits to help make ends meet. They were both out of reach at the time.
My hero received a 100% disability award letter two days after he died.

Locate Veteran's DD214 or request it. File a copy with your local Court Clerk for free and there will always be a permanent record. If you need to request the DD214, visit the National Archives. See more information on the VA website about who can request and what information can be obtained.
